Roughing It Easy
Your Woodchuck Rougher is a tool designed by
Kenneth Ferrell a Machinist and former Machine Tool Technology Instructor, who
also enjoys wood turning, After growing weary of constantly re-sharpening tools
I decided to make one that used a Carbide insert. Carbide tooling has been the
standard in machine shops for decades, but the grain structure of that grade of
carbide and the angles that were available didn't work well with wood.
After searching for quite some time I located a source for the inserts made
of Micro Grain Carbide with a high shear angle, Now I have and offer to you a
roughing tool that will remove stock much faster with less effort and give a
cutting edge that will out last HSS by at least 20 times.
When the insert gets dull on one edge, simply loosen the screw holding the
insert and turn it, it will give you 3 more fresh edges to cut with.
With a bit of practice you can achieve a surface that can rival that of a sharp
Skew. But it will not and can not take the place of a good Bowl Gouge, for
the very best Bowl Gouges I recommend Thompson Lathe tools Check our links
