Ken;
I just used the tool on that Click with the 'tin'
inlay. I t was the only tool that coped with the inlay without
needing constant sharpening. So I can't complain - it works just
like it should.

Recieved my Woodchuck Friday. Made a handle
from a piece of oak from a friends firewood pile. Used an 8 mm bit
to drill the handle. A few light taps with a rubber mallet and the
tool was firmly seated in the handle.
First use was to round three pieces of 2" square
cherry between centers. It really made the chips fly. I was very
pleased with the surface finish.
Then I used to make two maple burl pens. Turned between centers w/o
mandrel. Used the Woodchuck to turn the balnks from square to about
1/16" proud of the bushings in record (for me) time. Finished with a
few light cuts with a skew.
My Woodchuck is going to see a lot of use!

You’re probably familiar with the Easy Rougher available form Craft Supplies and other vendors but if you were at this past meeting you had an opportunity to see the home made version that Keith brought in for Show and Tell. Better yet, if you were at our last TurnAround you may have seen Keith use it to make a bowl.
Keith’s version of the tool was made by a friend of his who has this tool (and a few others) for sale; check out the Woodchuck Tools site.
I had an opportunity to use one of the Woodchuck Tools’ versions of the Rougher in my shop and try it out on a number of projects.
The tool is equally effective on face grain and spindle grain and does what the name implies; it is very efficient in roughing the blank to the desired shape for final turning. But here’s the thing, the tool is also effective in doing a lot of detail work. Keith demonstrated this at the TurnAround by pretty much making an entire bowl with the tool.
Although I was very impressed with the tools capabilities, it is these very capabilities that make me add this little caution to my recommendation. You may not want to buy the tool if you’re new to turning but consider buying the tool only if you know how to use a bowl gouge and a spindle gouge.
If you’re comfortable with your gouges, this tool is a nice addition to your collection and is great at roughing those large, odd shaped natural edged blanks and quickly removing waste from a large spindle. Although you can do more than rough with this tool, you will need to learn how to properly use your gouges for most detail work.
The tool from Woodchuck Tools is about half the price of the one from Craft Supplies (without a handle) and the replacement cutters are about a third the price; that’s a good deal.

Thanks Ken for a great tool. With you tips and
tricks, I made a handle, mounted the tool and cut some wood. Works
as advertised. Really cuts down on the rough cutting time. Thanks
again.

Ken, as I emailed you earlier I received my WCII, got it handled and
love it. My only problem is that I don't think it should be referred
to as a rougher. True, it does a great job getting large pieces down
to working size, but I have turned pens to within 1/16 inch, then
finished with the skew. The Woodchuck II is a great addition to any
shop with a wood lathe.

I've had the tool for a bit over a week and
finally turned three pens Ken really outdid himself with this
version -- cuts wood and resin with ease, handles well, and rides
over the tool rest perfectly.
